I want some feedback on what you would want to see in an Oracle User group? Focus on data, administration? Programming? etc...

With Oracle product now covering a very large suite of product, starting out is likely to be rather difficult unless you can bring together a number of different people from the various products.

If in your country you have no user group and that is what you are trying to form, go to Oracle for assistance to find some like minded people in your area. try and find out if there is an exisitng Peoplesoft or JD Edwards group and look to working with them to eventually bring it together and then you have all the BEA customers that come in. Its probably a pretty daunting task if you look at the whole but perhaps look to starting out with the old Oracle core, database, application server etc and Oracle Apps and just keep adding as you find the people to help build the other product groups.
Depending on what target audience you ask, the answer to your above question can be entirely different each time

Thanks for the reply. You are correct. I think in this case I'm focusing on Industry rather than product. I think that's the way to go because for any industry it should be a "soup to nuts" inclusion of product. For example it should start with infrastructure... Databases, App Servers, do they need to be clustered? load balanced?. Then we get to the front end. Do we need BI/DW capabilities? Something focused in particular for and industry like healthcare? Actually I posed the question for my local group of folks here in San Antonio, TX but I accidentally posted to the entire community. I like the feedback though. Where are you?

The Independent Oracle User Group covers many of the things that people have been discussing here. I see that you are a member of the RAC SIG, but there are also SIGs for BI/DW, PeopleSoft, Content Management, Enterprise Best Practices, Life Sciences, Spatial, etc... Enterprise Best Practices covers Database Management, Security, and Availability at a high level. The IOUG forum at Collaborate 09 will have over 350 sessions covering many of these topics. Since you are looking at a group in the San Antonio area, you may want to look at finding a Regional User Group in your area or starting one. There are a lot of benefits for starting an IOUG affiliated Regional User Group. I know this sounds like a commercial, but why recreate things that may already be there for you. Check out www.ioug.org for information on the SIGs, RUGs, and Collaborate 09. There is also an IOUG group here at OracleCommunity.

Todd, Thanks. You are correct. We have submitted to be a RUG for San Antonio and South Texas as the Oracle Developer and DBA Users Group (ODDBUG). We're just waiting to get our IOUG hosted site up and a meeting that will be around mid-april. I have been a member since '05 and it's been a great benefit. Our focus is going to be a balance of techie and business for the Federal IT, Federal Healthcare IT, and Commercial Healthcare communities here in San Antonio. These are the dominant industries. We will have a lot of discussions and presentations around BI/DW because I can see that's where our industry is headed. We of course need to provide solid infrastructure to support it such as Oracle, RAC, and a good model for replication. Question for you. As a chairperson on SIGs...How should we approach having a focus on BI/DW? Thanks

You could start off with joining the BIWA (Business Intelligence, Warehousing and Analytics) SIG - http://oraclebiwa.org. They have regular webinars and have been having an annual conference of their own. There will also be a lot of BI and DW sessions at Collaborate 09 - http://www.ioug.org/collaborate09 this year. If you would like to discuss further, please contact me!
