As developers of database monitoring tools we at dbWatch Software are curious to hear what tools you guys prefer to use for monitoring and managing your database environment. Is Oracle Enterprise Manager the one to have, or are there other, less well known tools that do a better job, or are easier to use or just make your life easier? We hope to use your input to improve our own monitoring tool dbWatch.

It is a common fact that most database applications store company’s confidential details such as employee information, client information, company’s financial details etc. Most often these details need to be shared with developers and others while providing production support for upgrades, training, outsourcing etc. As a result there is a great risk of this data being used for unlawful activities. Creating data masking

Being a Mac user and an Oracle DBA need not be an "oil and water" situation. This post describes a way to leverage virtualization (in this case, VMware Fusion) to access tools that are not currently available on OS X. My example is how to launch oidadmin on Mac OS X, but it can easily be adapted to other favorite applications.
Hey, I'm intrigued! Or at least, I'm bored enough to follow a link to the full… Continue

is a practical solution for the problem of protecting sensitive information that is shared while providing production support for upgrades, patching, testing etc. It has several options for reducing security risk. One such is that it creates clones of databases which would be smaller than the actual one by copying only the required data. It also has an option of creating a template that contains only the required… Continue

I had some interesting exchanges with folks at Oracle. They advised me that the blog post for configuring a Mac to work with the Oracle 10gR2 client can't be referenced because VMWare isn't supported. They suggested that I run Oracle VM. I was stunned since there were two points in the blog post. One is running Oracle Client 10gR2 on a Mac against any Oracle instance. Two is how to create a virtual Windows server to have a test environment anywhere you go.
On their suggestion, I've… Continue
