Hello.

I am new in performance too. I read Oracle High Performance Turning for 9i and 10g (Powerll, ElSevier digital press). It's a good book but when we carrefully read and practice with the examples we find a lot of contradictations. I don't know if this is an author problem or if it happens in differents situatios (OS system, computer, different Oracle instalation process).

To start in performance I think that this book is perfect.

I have three presentations online to Oracle performance tuning (Indexes, tablespaces and tables). Link

Sorry but the powerpoints are in spanish

what about free and official books first?

choose your release and search for "2 Day + Performance Tuning Guide" and "Performance Tuning Guide" - http://tahiti.oracle.com/

Hi

In developer point of view, we can tune any query using explain plan. I found this is the easiest way to tune the query.

Steps:
1. Check the explain plan (Explain plan for seleect * from tab1,tab2 where tab1.id = tab2.id)
2. See what index has been used by each table.
3. If the query is using Range scan or full scan and huge data exists in the table. In this case you have to suppress the index untill table uses Unique index.

In oracle site you can find pdf's for peformance tunning.

Thanks
