its better to create a new tmp column of date type...and fill it with the converted data from the varchar column...then delete the original varchar column and recreate it as date....and then copy from the tmp column to the new created column

after that, don't forget the important step of tracking down the person who created such a wonderful table and choking them for at least 30 seconds.
